Specifications: Sizing, Fabrics and Colours

Sizing

Please note this is a rough guide only. Maximum size may vary depending on your design and fabric type and we offer an oversized service on demand. Email us for more information.

Garments (closed): maximum embroidery design 25cm x 25cm.

Flat fabric or open clothing: maximum size 54cm x 36cm.

Text and detail will need to be sized appropriately.
24pt and above for best results across different fabrics and fonts.
Under 24pt is possible, however the outcome will vary according to font, spacing and fabric type. Testing required.

Clothing and Fabric

Embroidery works well on many different types of fabric. Medium and heavyweight, non-stretch fabrics are simplest to work with.

For unusual fabrics, lightweight materials such as chiffon, or stretch fabrics (elastane blends etc), we will need to create additional samples to give you the perfect result.

We’re happy for you to bring us fabric and garments, or we can source clothing for you from suppliers at wholesale prices.

Sourcing your own clothing

If you’re bringing your own fabric, make sure you have sufficient quantities to sample on. Things like the fabric’s age, type, weight and texture all affect the end result. If it’s an unusual or valuable item, it’s always better to have a similar piece to test on first.

As standard, we sample all embroideries on undyed calico, weight 200gsm. This gives us an accurate idea of how your embroidery will look on cotton, denim and most other non-stretch fabrics.

If your embroidery is for a different type of fabric we will need you to supply it prior to the job or accept the variability as we move between fabrics.

Colours

We have over 200 colours. We include colour-matching to our in-house thread selection, as part of our standard service.

If you need extremely precise colours for your work please let us know as we can order additional shades. Note there is an additional fee for specialised colour-matching.

Special metallic, fluoroscent and matt threads are also available, price variable.

If you have any questions about colour-matching or any other aspect of the services we provide, contact us via email.

Simple Quotations

There’s a £30 minimum for all jobs with 1831; we welcome one-offs as well as multiples. Costs per unit go down when ordering in bulk. For a simple estimate, please email us your design as a .png, .jpg or pdf with as many of the following criteria as possible:

  1. Design size, and mock-up if you can.
  2. Clothing or material (cap, t-shirt, loose fabric etc) and quantity.
  3. If you’re supplying fabric/clothing or need us to. Please indicate in your email if you’d like both options.
  4. Colour information if applicable: special colours such as flourescents, metallics; or if you need our special Pantone colour matching service.
  5. Your name and contact details.
  6. Dispatch address or if you’re able to collect.
  7. Deadline, if known.

When we have this information, we’ll be happy to provide you an estimate.

Pricing

We’re frequently asked what the price is for a standard embroidery. The truth is the price varies significantly even across similar-looking designs. We look at:

  1. Design complexity
  2. Size and quantity
  3. Density of thread coverage
  4. Anticipated consultation and sampling requirements
  5. Materials and additional services needed
  6. Turnaround (including delivery charges)

Accurate quotations are based off images and information you provide: the more information you can give upfront, the better estimate we can give.

Disclaimer

The quote we provide is based from your initial specifications, and lead-time cited is from the date you supply artwork. If specifications change or there’s a delay to supplying artwork we will need to requote, and/or update the estimated time of completion.

to induce dreams of new possibilities – Maia Magoga, 2021

We worked with Maia to Create a 2m wide text embroidery for their end of residency show, ‘On The Need For New Rituals’ at  OmVed Gardens. The maximum frame size for 1831’s embroidery machine is 450mm. We made the piece by carefully aligning each section of the embroidery, creating seamless text from a series of embroidery ‘tiles’.

Jumbo Press, 2018-2020

Jumbo Press, a risograph studio originally based in South London, started to experiment and trial with creating an embroidered range of products as a long-lasting and durable alternative to printing on fabrics.

Together we created hoodies, caps, bags and more for their online shop and successful crowdfunder. Jumbo is known for their stylish, high quality illustration and design. We established a sampling process, a distinctive colour palette, and made-to-order workflow to ensure their large range of products could be produced in a cost-effective way, without sacrificing any of the quality they’re known for.

Aysha Tengiz, 2019-2020

We worked with artist Aysha Tengiz to  create t-shirts, sweatshirts and caps for them to sell at art fairs. Line and colour is very important in their work, we experimented with different sizing, line weights and detail to create the perfect illustration across their line of products.
